"Often the difference between a successful man (woman) and a failure is not one's better abilities or ideas, but the courage (faith) that one has to bet on his (her) ideas, to take a calculated risk, and to act." Maxwell Maltz. Please share this blog. Please make comments about your own struggles (we all have them) and success. This will encourage others and help them follow in your successes, however small. SMARTERR goals - write your goals SMARTERR
Please ask questions in the comments section below.
· Specific (with a
baseline)
· Measurable
·
Achievable/Attainable (not too hard and not too easy)
· Results-Focused
(include a specific outcome or product)
· Time-Bound
(specific time it will be accomplished)
·
Evaluate/Enhance/Adjust (create a process for ongoing evaluation and
adjustment.)
·
Reporting/Accountability (have someone you will report to on a regular
basis and who will hold you accountable in a gentle but firm manner.)
·
Reinforcement/Reward (build in a celebration of some kind... it may be
very simple or elaborate depending on the needs)
When you write
your goal, write it out in detail. Be specific.
What is the date it will be accomplished, Who will you report to and
when (how often). Discuss with this
person or these people in advance. This should be at the most monthly. There will be some goals where you will want
to report at least weekly or even daily.
In advance, write out what the reward will be. Typically it is better to have smaller
rewards or celebrations as larger rewards or celebrations tend to become more
important than the actual achievement of the goal. Natural or logical rewards/consequences are
always best. (If you want to fit into a
particular dress/size, and attend a specific event, that is the reward.) The baseline is where you are right now. Once you have written your baseline, spend
your time, visualize having accomplished the goal. Have pictures around you representing your
having accomplished the goal. The
baseline will help you go back and remember what you have accomplished and
build self-efficacy.
Review this
written goal at least monthly, or weekly if needed. Make adjustments as needed. It may be helpful to do this with the person
or people you are reporting to.
Once a day, either early in the morning or before bed, write out 10 goals in simple terms. Just a simple one line or sentence or even just a few words. Your primary goal(s) is(are) written in detail. These 10 are additional goals you want to accomplish and can include a simplified wording of your primary goal(s). Do not look at what you have previously written. This will help you refine your goals to what is really the most important to you. Write them in present tense, i.e. I weigh 150 lbs,, I make $100,000.00 per year, I read the scriptures daily. Visualize yourself (breathe deeply and do this in a calm/relaxed state) as if you have already accomplished (or are accomplishing) each of these goals. You can just take a few seconds for each. Just get a mental picture in your mind of you being this person or having accomplished the goal.
Every day, write
three things you are grateful for and write one genuine thank you note to
someone. This can be on paper, text,
messenger, or e-mail. This will change
your life.
